Sacked C’River Speaker Coming Back? No Way, Says Owunah

  • Admits Gov Has Called For Truce, But New Speaker Coming Soon
  • Speaker’s Removal Fulfils Emmah Isong’s Prophecy

Okon Owunah, one of the members of the Cross River State House of Assembly who signed for the removal of the speaker, Elvert Ayambem, has said that there is no going back on the speaker’s sack. He told TNN in an interview that the speaker has gone for good and cannot return, except the 17 members go through the same process to return him.

Saying that the state governor, Senator Bassey Otu is aware of their action and that the aggrieved lawmakers have listened to the emissary he sent to them, for a peaceful resolution of the crisis in the Assembly, Owunah said on Wednesday that it would be difficult for Ayambem to return, even as he noted that a new speaker would be announced soon.

The speaker’s removal however brings to fulfilment a prophecy by Bishop Emmah Isong, that the speaker was going to get into trouble if prayers were not offered for God’s intervention.

When TNN asked to know where the Assembly mace was, he said the 17 members were in custody of the mace and would not say which of them in particular was with the mace.

Owunah said if they had allowed all angry lawmakers to endorse the removal notice, up to 22 out of the 25 members would have signed. He said for the speaker not to know of the plot for his removal, it meant that he was far from the people he was leading.

The lawmaker also said it was not true that external forces had a hand in their decision to sack the speaker. According to him, the information was part of efforts to divert attention from the sins of the former speaker.

Owunah told TNN that a new speaker would soon emerge and that his emergence would be done in accordance with laid down rules of the House. He said they had planned to announce the new speaker on Wednesday but for the chaos that trailed the speaker’s removal.
