Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Rivers State Council, Paul Bazia-Nsaneh, has called for a shift in the media narrative of Rivers State from one focused on conflict to one that highlights development, opportunities, and economic potential.
He made this call at a plenary session titled “Unlocking Bonny’s Economic Potential” organized by the Bonny Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture.

Bazia-Nsaneh emphasized the power of the press in shaping perceptions and attracting investment, stressing that journalism should focus more on development communication and agenda setting to boost the state’s economy.
“We must change the story from Rivers of war and Rivers of blood to Rivers of possibilities and growth,” he said.
The NUJ Chairman highlighted the significance of the blue economy, describing it as a critical avenue for ensuring environmental stability, food security, and sustainable livelihoods in Rivers State.
He noted that the ocean’s vast potential as a source of wealth requires increased funding, political will, and collaboration to harness it effectively.
Bazia-Nsaneh commended the Bonny Chamber for its proactive steps in exploring local opportunities, especially in tourism, pointing out that Bonny Island has its own tourism potential that can be harnessed, eliminating the need to look elsewhere.
“No need to go for tourism in other areas such as Zanzibar when we have our own in Bonny Island if harnessed,” he said.
The NUJ Chairman urged all stakeholders to amplify the positive stories of Bonny and the wider Rivers State, emphasizing that the completion of the Bonny-Bodo Road will be a game-changer for the region, transforming it into a hub of economic activity.
“If we don’t blow the trumpet, some persons will not know we have the trumpet,” he added.
Bazia-Nsaneh’s participation in the event was part of the renewed partnership between the NUJ Rivers State Council and the Bonny Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture.
