Rivers NLC Ready For Strike Over Minimum Wage

1 min read

Workers in Rivers State look good to proceed on strike from next week as a way of forcing the governor, Nyesom Wike to implement the new minimum wage.
The workers, under the aegis of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, have already served a notice of strike on the government. Beatrice Otubo, chairman of the NLC in Rivers State, said on Wednesday that the state government was yet to come to terms with the organised labour on the details of the minimum wage.
In January this year, the government had announced that the minimum wage would be paid but did not say if it would take effect from May last year, or this year. Labour wants the payment back-dated to the date the new wage was signed into law by the federal government.
In this year’s budget, the governor had earmarked a whooping N8 billion for the payment of the minimum wage in the 2020 budget which has since been signed into law by the governor.
Calls to Mr Paulinus Nsirim, commissioner for information in the state, were not answered as at the time of going to press on Tuesday.
