Rivers Guber Race: Aspirants Wait For Amaechi, Wike * Wike May Pick Successor This Week
2 min read
The two leaders of the two major political parties in Rivers State, Nyesom Wike(PDP) and Rotimi Amaechi(APC) appear confused on the modalities for the selection of the candidate for the gubernatorial election in their parties. This is even as the aspirants are waiting to hear from the two leaders before taking any step towards realising their ambition.
Till date, none of the people considered to be strong contenders for the office of governor has publicly declared the intention to contest the election, apart from Fara Dagogo who represents the Bonny/Degema Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. It was not clear if Tele Ikuru, a former deputy governor in the state, has also collected the PDP nomination form.
TNN learnt that the state governor, Nyesom Wike and leader of the PDP in Rivers State, has already given out instructions that nobody should buy the party’s nomination form. It was learnt on Monday night that only one form would be procured and handed over to whoever would be chosen by the governor.

Sources said even though a lot of the aspirants would have loved to buy the form and begin consultations, they are restrained and are watching the body language of the governor on the matter.
TNN learnt that between Wednesday and the end of the week, Wike may assemble all the aspirants and then a decision would be taken finally on the person that may have been chosen to fly the party’s flag.
In the PDP however, there are serious contenders like the SSG, Mr Tamuno Danagogo, Lee Maeba, Austin Opara Emeka Woke and Dumnamene Dekor.

Last weekend, there were speculations that Wike and the PDP leadership were to come up with the name of the aspirant that has got the blessing of Wike. But that decision was not taken, even as the governor is now moving to all parts of the country to market himself ahead of the PDP presidential primary election.
In the APC, the race appears to be between four people-Dakuku Peterside, Adawari George, Tonye Cole and Tonye Princewill. As at press time, it was not clear who Amaechi will support. The only thing that is certain in the APC is that the ticket will be given to someone from the riverine part of the state.

Sources said Amaechi is currently confused on whether to support Cole or Peterside. Cole and Peterside have flown the party’s flag in the past but could not make it, as the PDP continued to show more strength than the APC in the state.
The APC, according to its spokesman, Chris Finebone, is not yet sure of the method it would use to choose its governorship aspirant. He told TNN on Tuesday that the modality would be decided upon sometime in the future.
