Lions Club Moves To Tackle Gender Based Violence

The gender based wing of Lions Club International known as New Voices has pledged to initiate programmes targeted at promoting the rights and dignity of the vulnerable in the society in order to protect the human dignity.

Marketing nominee and speaker of New Voices Lion, Nkese Eneyo dropped the hint during the just concluded symposium organized by the body in Calabar.
According to her, New voices was out to checkmate gender based and sexual based violence while also providing a platform for the vulnerable to actualize their potentials through capacity building and exposure.

She revealed that the group was a creation of the Lion Club International District 404A2 to bring the humanitarian activities of Lions Club closer to the unprivileged and often neglected members of the society.
Also, political stakeholders in Nigeria were urged to initiate deliberate policies and actions targeted towards ensuring equitable involvement of women in leadership circles.

According to campaigners, such steps should begin with a liberalized playground to attract greater participation of women in the political arena.
Wife of Cross River State governor, Dr. Linda Ayade also spoke during the event. Represented by her special adviser on Women Affairs, Associate Prof. Getrude Nja, she expressed dismay over the negligible number of women in key political sphere, noting that such anomaly must be addressed to tackle the prevailing economic and security woes bedevilling the country.

She lauded the Lions Clubs International for providing an enabling platform for grooming women and youths for leadership roles in the society stressing that the gesture has enhanced the realization of their leadership potentials.

In their remarks, the District Governor of District 404A2 Nigeria, Lion Lynda Odu-Okpeseyi and the Marketing Nominee who also double as the Speaker of New Voices, Lion Nkese Eneyo, revealed that the body was conceive to mobilize collective actions against gender discrimination and inequality.

In his submission, Sam Ekpuk, the Area Leader for Area 8B enjoined the political class to explore the leadership skills of women in building a prosperous and virile nation.
Ekpuk advocated a systems process to equip the youths with needed capacity, intellect and knowledge to tackle the menace posed by illiteracy in order to build the country of our dreams.

He contended that humane and compassionate posture of the female gender was needed to enthrone a viable Nation devoid of the current insecurity and hardship ravaging the country.

In her paper entitled The role of Mothers in Building leadership in children, Pastor Buchi Oyeniyi, the President of TWIM, urged women to rise up to the natural way of instilling the right virtues in their children to guard against the upsurge in various activities perpetuated by youths.
