Residents of Enima Omin Omin Layout in the 8th Miles axis of Calabar are now facing a serious landslide suspected to have been worsened by consistent rainfall in the Cross River State capital.
TNN learnt that the community has been facing the threat for years and has written to past and present governments without any positive response.
One of the residents, Mr David Edem, a lawyer, told TNN over the phone that the community needed urgent help from the state government to prevent more damage to their property.
He also expressed the fear that the lives of people in the area were at risk, as the earth movement was becoming unchallenged, very frightening and daring.
He said “as a result of the persistent rain for two weeks, there was a serious landslide which affected some houses and the major drainage channel in the estate. The earth is still moving and causing more damage to the drainage channel.
“The landslide caused the collapse of several buildings and devastating damage to the drainage channels in the estate.”
He lamented that “the community has never enjoyed any government presence since its establishment to date,” noting that they had constructed a major drainage channel in the estate to collect rainwater, but that the drainage channel needed to be reconstructed, and the ravine baseline fortified.
