A south-south governor is believed to have contributed to Wednesday’s freedom from jail, of the governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party in Akwa Ibom State, Obong Bassey Albert, OBA.
TNN learnt that a PDP member of the House of Representatives from the state and an ally of OBA, in partnership with some senators mobilised forces to ensure bail for the senator representing the Uyo Senatorial District in the National Assembly.
OBA was released on bail by the court of appeal in Port Harcourt. He was released on health grounds, while his appeal is pending. While at the Ikot Ekpene prison, OBA was said to have made donations to some of the inmates while also paying fines for other inmates to secure their freedom.
OBA was sentenced to 42 years imprisonment on December 1, 2022 by Mr Justice A.A.Okeke o the federal high court, Uyo, on corruption charges.
His Uyo residence literally caught fire as he arrived home. His followers and family members were on hand to receive him.
He had been dragged before the court by Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for receiving exotic cars worth N204m from a contractor of the Akwa Ibom State Government, Jide Omokare.
The south-south governor was said to have been angry over OBA’s travails as it was perceived that the governor, Udom Emmanuel may have been instrumental to the senator’s travails.
With his release from prison, the campaign organisation of the senator has received more life. His wife and other party loyalists have been on the forefront in the campaign for his election. They have been going to all parts of the state to seek support for the YPP candidate.
