Fire Outbreak: Rivers Traders Count Losses As LG Administrator Deploys Extinguishers To Boost Safety

In his effort to curtail the incessant fire outbreak within the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, the administrator, Dr. Clifford Ndu Walter, has procured a range of fire extinguishers.

This is in response to the recent devastating fire outbreak at the ‘Rumuomasi Morning Market’s in the LGA, where goods and property worth millions of naira were destroyed.

While narrating their ordeals, one of the affected traders, Mr Anthony Chikere, who markets wholesale materials and laces, lamented that he lost goods of over N100 million to the fire.

Also, another victim who is a widow and mother of four, who trades in foodstuffs, Nkiru Olisemeka, wondered how she would cater for her children who are in the university.

To avert further outbreaks, the administrator revealed that the fire extinguishers are to be deployed across the local government areas to enhance fire safety and prevent potential outbreaks.

It’s also aimed at achieving quick response to douse the fire to avert escalation, while expecting the intervention of the state fire service.

Walter disclosed that upon assuming office, he identified a critical gap in firefighting preparedness, specifically, the absence of fire extinguishers within the Council Secretariat.

Acknowledging the significant risk this posed to lives and public property, he took immediate steps to address the deficiency.

According to him, “the newly acquired fire extinguishers, available in various sizes, will be strategically installed in council offices, government-owned facilities, local markets, and other high-risk public spaces throughout the LGA.

“This initiative is a preventive safety measure to mitigate the dangers of fire outbreaks, which are often triggered by natural elements or flammable materials.

“To ensure proper and effective use of the extinguishers, selected council personnel will undergo professional training on safe handling and operation procedures.”

He added that the initiative is part of his commitment to safety, risk reduction, and emergency preparedness across Obio/Akpor.
