At the Nigerian Army 45th Social Media Seminar held at the University of Port Harcourt on Wednesday, the Nigeria’s Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, issued a stern warning against misinformation.
Shaibu gave this warning during his opening remarks at the seminar which featured a paper presentation titled “Promoting Peace and Trust Through Responsible Online Engagement” by Dr Zainab Saka, alongside interactive sessions, a competition on Nigerian Army social media handles, and presentation of souvenirs to participants.
The army chief stressed that fake news undermines troops’ morale and threatens national security stability.
Speaking on this year’s theme, “Emerging Trends on Social Media: Impact on National Security,” the chief of army staff emphasized the need for social media practitioners to speak truth in their reportage.
According to him, truth is the only remedy for misinformation and inaccurate reportage.
Shaibu who was represented by the Director General of the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation, Major General J.E. Osifo, also shared his experience as a frontline commander.
He revealed that disinformation and fake news not only demoralised troops but also diminished the sacrifices of soldiers and dishonour fallen heroes.
His words, “misinformation deepens mistrust and strengthens adversaries’ narratives rather than fading over time.”
He urged social media practitioners to adhere to international best practices in journalism, with emphasis on accuracy, accountability, and responsible engagement.
The Army Chief also expressed appreciation for the continued support of Nigerians, particularly social media operators, in advancing national security objectives.
In his welcome address, the Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Major General Musa Etsu-Ndagi, lamented the negative use of social media, citing studies indicating that 46.6 per cent of respondents believe social media contributes to civil unrest through the spread of false information.
He called for collective efforts to promote responsible online engagement and reject misinformation, hate speech, and divisive content.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary, Rivers State Ministry of Information and Communication, Honour Sirawoo, commended the Nigerian Army for organising the seminar and pledged collaboration through the state’s media platforms, including television, radio stations, and newspapers.
