Residents, business owners and commuters plying the Eleme axis of the East-West Road, in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, have continued to lament the effects of the dreadful road on their businesses and vehicles.
Following the torrential rainfall, the deplorable state of the road that connects Eleme, Tai, Gokana, Khana, Andoni and Opobo Nkoro, including states like Akwa Ibom, Cross River, has continued to go from bad to worse.
In an interview with TNN, the National Rescue Movement NRM, party candidate for the Rivers State House of Assembly, Eleme Constituency, in the just concluded 2023 election, Hon. Olaka Osaro Olaka, urged the federal government to immediately intervene and rehabilitate the gory road.
Olaka who is a resident of Alode in Eleme LGA lamented that the dilapidated state of the road has led to economic stagnation of the people and commuters who ply that route.
He called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu led federal government of Nigeria, to ensure ease of doing business in the area, in order to alleviate the sufferings of the people.
Also speaking, Evangelist Matthew Akah insisted that a state of emergency be declared following the deteriorating condition of the road, adding that commercial activities in the area were dwindling because of the road.
Akah frowned at the delay in fixing the road which he said has claimed many lives. According to him, “this road has exposed a lot of us to untold hardship, danger and innocent people have also lost their lives on this road.
“It is indeed disturbing, that a federal road as important as the Eleme East-West Road will be abandoned to rot away, a road that connects to other local government areas and state.
“We have several companies, big companies on this road, yet nothing has been done to salvage this road from collapsing completely, this is really not fair, government should do something and very fast about this road.”
