Economic Boom Looms As Rivers Hosts Public Servants Games
2 min readThere is an expected boom in the economy of Rivers State which will be hosting the 43rd edition of the public service games expected to hold between November 27 and December 5 this year. About 10,000 sports men and women from various ministries and parastatals across the country are being expected in the state.
At a press conference in Port Harcourt on Friday, National President of the Federation of Public Service Games, FEPSGA, Mr Aloku Amaebi said it was gratifying to note that Rivers State was hosting the event for the second time since 1980 when the first games took place.
He said the state stood to gain so much, including a growth in its GDP, as the entire country would be gathering in the state and would contribute to a boom in its economy. The event has been christened Simplified Rivers 2024.
The president addressed the press in the company of the secretary to the state government, Tammy Danagogo, the head of service, Dr George Nwake, who is also the chairman of the Local Organising Committee, LOC, and the commissioner for information, Mr Joe Johnson, who chairs the publicity sub committee.
Amaebi said participants would compete for honours in about 16 different sporting events, including scrabble, chess, football, tennis, badminton, handball, ayo (a local game), volleyball, draft, athletics, squash, basketball and swimming.
According to him, male and female public servants would compete for medals, while also noting that there would be Paralympic games to enable the federation look out for the physically challenged who can do the nation proud in competitive events.
Also speaking, the SSG told journalists that the governor was excited to host the games as it would be an opportunity to unite the nation’s workforce as a sports loving governor. He said the state was ready tom host the event and assured that all participants would experience what he called top notch hospitality.
On his part, the HOS said the team spirit among public servants would be promoted, adding that the games would afford workers the privilege of unwinding in an environment of peace for wellness and stress relief.
