The people of Bayelsa State may have it real tough battling with perennial flood this year, as early signals have emerged, with some streets and homes already taken over by the rampaging flood waters.
For about three days, the people experienced heavy rains, leading to the flooding of some parts of the state capital, including Azikoro, Amarata, Kpansia and Igbogene. Samphino Street, which has always suffered same fate every year, was not spared.
This is even with the efforts of the state government to mitigate the flooding in the state, after the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET)’s warning. The government had commenced the desilting of creeks and canals within the Yenagoa metropolis and its environs.
It is feared that the situation may worsen in the coming days as the rains get more serious. Some of the residents are believed to have started relocating to areas considered safer, under the present circumstance.
Meanwhile, the Cross River State governor, Senator Bassey has sympathized with his Borno State counterpart, over the havoc caused by flood in the state.
Otu lamented the harrowing situation that has befallen the inhabitants of Maiduguri, leaving scores of lives lost, hundreds of thousands displaced and in dire need of assistance. A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Nsa Gill, quoted the governor as saying, “We understand the pain and trauma that this disaster has caused, and we are committed to providing support in any way we can.
“As a fellow state in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, we understand the importance of standing together in times of crisis. We appreciate and commend the Federal Government’s swift response to provide first aid; dispatched relief materials to provide immediate assistance to the affected communities.”
“We understand the devastating effects of natural disasters and the importance of preparedness and risk reduction measures. In the spirit of fraternity and solidarity, we call upon all well-meaning citizens and organisations to join hands with the Federal government in supporting the victims of this tragedy. We encourage donations, contributions, and any assistance towards rebuilding the affected communities and restoring hope to the affected individuals.”
