C’River Guber: From Supreme Court, Otu, Onor Now Closer to Knowing Their Fate

In a matter of days, the Supreme Court will settle the legal dispute between the governor of Cross River State, Senator Bassey Otu and the candidate of the PDP in last year’s gubernatorial election, Senator Sandy Onor.

The duo have been dragging the position since last March when INEC declared Otu as the properly elected governor. Otu contested under the APC and was dragged before the elections petition tribunal by Onor who insists that the governor was not qualified to contest the election.

Onor had also contended that Otu’s deputy, Peter Odey, was equally not qualified to contest the election ab initio. But the tribunal, in its judgement, said Otu was qualified and was also properly elected as governor.

Not satisfied, Onor headed for the court of appeal. But the appellate court also gave victory to the governor, a decision that did not go down well with Onor who decided to approach the apex court.

On Thursday, the Supreme Court justices heard from counsel to the two contenders and reserved judgement. The parties involved would be informed once the court decides on the judgment day.
