In a bid to curb the level of cult clashes and killings in the state, the Cross River State government has declared the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Councillorship Candidate for Ward 6, Calabar South in the Saturday, May 30, 2020 local government council elections, Cyril Bassey and 34 others wanted.
TNN gathered from a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary on Security, Dr Alfred Mboto that a reward has also been placed on the heads of the 35 youths in the most wanted list in the state.
Top on the list are two inmates recently granted amnesty by the Chief Judge under Prerogative of Mercy, prison personnel as well as a dismissed military police.
According to the statement, “the spate of killings and violence taking place in the Calabar metropolis over supremacy of various fraternities is alarming and unacceptable by the government and people of Cross River State”.
In an interview with Special Adviser on security for South to Governor Ben Ayade, Ani Esin, he expressed optimism that the incessant killings in the state will soon be arrested.
He said:,“My department has done so much under the watchful eyes of governor Ayade. Right now we are at the climax of arresting the situation.
“We have also activated every security checkpoint to make sure that they don’t escape. Anyone who accommodates them will face the same wrath. When asked if the recent amnesty granted to over 90 inmates by the Chief Judge of the state to decongest the correctional center will not contribute to this as two of them are among the people declared wanted, he said, “they were carefully assessed and those of them with good conduct were released and I believe that our assessment was correct”.
