C’River Communities Challenge Lawmakers After Receiving Transformers From Non-Indegene

Communities of Ward 9 in Calabar South Local Government Area have posed a challenge to her lawmakers to stand up to their responsibilities and redeem their image.
This is coming after they received two 300kVA transformers from Daniel Asuquo who is representing Akamkpa/Biase constituency in the House of Representatives.
Some communities who spoke with TNN said the community had long suffered from darkness as a result of not having someone to replace the previous transformer that got damaged. They disclosed that the lawmakers representing them at the National Assembly only made promises without fulfilling them.
The community said they were however surprised on receiving the transformers from someone who is neither from the local government nor their constituency.
Councillor representing the ward, Asuquo Obop who spoke with TNN expressed satisfaction at the project, noting that the community women had been singing and dancing. He said that the donor had nothing to do with the constituency which was a challenge to other politicians in the area.

His words: “The donor has nothing to do with this constituency; he is not from this local government, he is not from this ward but he is very sensitive about the plight of his people. When he was told that certain places in this local government do not have light, he promised that he was going to do this and he has kept his word. So we are grateful to him.
“It is also worthy of note that somebody must have attracted this project here. We are grateful to that person too. And it’s not just this, he has given us two.
“Our representatives here are aware, but they promised that they were going to do something about it. But while we were still waiting, this came so nobody will say let’s wait for the one they promised. This is the best at hand and it is worth more than a million in the bush.
“This is like a challenge to them that somebody could come from outside their constituency to come and do a project like this. They should stand up. It is up to them because people are asking questions about the transformers and we can’t play politics with it. We tell them where it is coming from. So they have to redeem their image and it’s up to them.”
A community leader, Frances Edem said, “For a long time now we don’t light. I am very happy as we have received this. For almost two years now, we have not seen light so I pray forGod to bless him for remembering us.”
