The people of Ekpeye Ethnic Nationality under the aegis of Uzugbani Ekpeye, the apex social cultural organization in Ekpeye land have condemned the killing in Ekpeye land resulting from a suspected cult clash of two opposing groups.
Recall that there was a case of supremacy battle involving two rival cult groups on Saturday, November 5, 2022 at the Abuja Housing Estate in Ahoada town, headquarters of Ahoada East LGA resulting to the death of some persons.
Reacting to this development, President General of Uzugbani Ekpeye, the Ekpeye People’s General Assembly, Dr. Ukechukwu Nyemenim described the incident as very unfortunate, barbaric and uncalled for especially, at a time Ekpeye people are going through turbulent times occasioned by the flood disaster that has ravaged over 95 per cent population of Ekpeye wondering why the insignificant few Ekpeye youths chose to chase shadows rather than things that should better their lives at this critical period of seeming economic hardship.
It noted with sadness that while Ekpeye sons and daughters are making frantic efforts to galvanize support for Ekpeye flood victims, the unguided few individuals decided to cause disaffection in the system that is already yielding results through the traditional governance of Eze Ekpeye Logbo 111, Eze Kelvin Ngozi Anugwo PhD.
The National Executive Council of Uzugbani Ekpeye called on the security agencies to carry out an in-depth investigation and bring perpetrators to book while also tightening all loopholes to guard against reprisal attack.
“Uzugbani Ekpeye is therefore, calling for calm as everything is been done to safeguard Ekpeye Land”. We are also calling for partnership with the two Local Government Chairmen of Ahoada East and West LGAs, Barr. Ben Eke and Hon Hope Ikiriko as well as the Eze Ekpeye Logbo In Council to conclude security arrangements to ensure that inhabitants of Ekpeye Land are safer and more secured”.
The apex social cultural organization, Uzugbani Ekpeye warned trouble shooters to steer clear of Ekpeye Land or face dare consequences of the wrath of Ekpeye people as Ekpeye must move forward.
It is still not very clear what led to the attack, but residents who spoke with TNN in a telephone interview reported hearing gunshots, as well as confirmed the death of some persons.
Reports revealed that “a shoot-out ensued between the invaders suspected to be members of a cult group and their rivals, which resulted to the death of about eight persons and a woman sustaining gunshots wounds, with corpses of deceased purportedly littered around the estate as at Sunday morning.”
According to Mr. Friday Azunuka, “the thing happened in Abuja Housing Estate, Ahoada main town, Ahoada East Local Government Area. The place is boiling, people are afraid. Cult people invaded the estate yesterday night, (5th November, 2022).
“From what we are hearing, they said a cult group came in search of other cult group members, so they started shooting at each other, that was what happened.”
Confirming the number of people that lost their lives in the incident, Azunuka said “I can’t say what I don’t know. We are hearing eight, but we know for sure that people died, yes, people died, that is why many people are running away for fear, people died, but I don’t know how many, let me not say what I don’t know.”
He added that, “Well, I am just being careful, if we hear any kpararam, I will leave with my family, but for now, I am still here, we will continue to remain indoor for now. Some people have left, everyone is afraid. It is shocking how the lives of follow human beings no longer mean anything again. People are killed in a way and manner that even mosquito, fowl cannot be killed, god forbid.”
Another resident who spoke on the incident wondered why the police did not respond swiftly to calm the situation. According to Miss Grace Animam, “We are afraid, people are living the place. It is also not good that when an incident like this is happening, the police will not arrive early to calm it, it is very bad, now see, eight people have died, it’s very bad.
“Myself, I am afraid, very, very afraid, but God will save us. I might leave this morning. No, I am not living in the estate, but my house is very close. My sister, this thing they call stray bullet, is very dangerous, so, I can’t stay, I will leave if I notice anything.”
She further advised, “There is no gain in cultism, no gain, our youths should shun cultism and get a better life, so they can live long.”
TNN gathered from a reliable source that Police personnel from Ahoada Divisional Police Headquarters in Ahoada town, Ahoada East Local Government area visited the scene.
