The Bayelsa Branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), led by the Chairman, Dr Ngowari Torunana has called residents to be wary of the danger posed by the killer cancer disease.
The NMA made the call in commemoration of the 2021 World Cancer Day which is celebrated every 4, of February.
The NMA is in collaboration with Oasis Public Health Consulting Limited, Rotary Club of Yenagoa City Centre, Goadcoast Developmental Foundation and other non-governmental organizations in the awareness campaign against the scourge.
A statement issued by the secretary of NMA in Bayelsa, Dr Onini Ebimobowei, said the theme of the 2021 world cancer day was “I am and I will” to reflect individuals’ motivation to speak up and act promptly in the fight against cancer, adding that early detection of the desease was the only way to save lives.
He said the event was marked by a road walk from Ekeki Motor Park to Swali Market, in Yenagoa during which there was massive public enlightenment on cancer awareness and its prevention.
The statement further noted that there was direct interaction with the public as well as distribution of flyers containing messages on cancer awareness and prevention.
“Still in the spirit of commemoration of the World cancer day, the NMA and their collaborators encourage members of the public to always go to health care facilities for regular check ups as many cancers are curable when detected early,” it read.
The Association also emphasized the need for regular self breast examination to help detect breast cancer early as breast cancer is one of the commonest preventable cancers.
