A young gambler in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital (name withheld) has reportedly taken his own life by drinking substance suspected to be insecticide after losing a chance to have won a sum of N35 million through football betting.

According to eye witnesses, the deceased gambler had picked series of different football matches and betted with high odds with a paltry sum of N200, to win N35 million if all his forecasts went in accordance with his predictions.

It was gathered that the said gambler had the opportunity to have smiled to the banks with about N7 million and more if he had listened to his friends who advised him to cash out midway.
It was further learnt that the deceased, who hailed from Ovom in the state capital, was obstinate and not ready to listen to pieces of advice from his friends who pleaded with him to withdraw from the gamble and go home with the millions he was sure of.

“One thing that is good about betting is that you have the option to opt out of the game and go home with whatever amount you are sure of. At that point, you have nothing to lose because you have already recovered the money you used to play the game.

“We told him (the deceased) to cash out with about N7 million and even more but he refused, insisting that he was confident to win the N35 million.
“What really gave him the confidence was that the last game before he would win N35 million was between Barcelona FC and one other smaller club. He was so confident that Barcelona would not lose to the smaller team.

“In football, you don’t have to underestimate any club side. Unfortunately, Barcelona lost the last game to the other team and that’s how he lost everything.
“After the last match, he became so moody and refused to talk to anyone. The following morning, he drank a sniper and died and was buried in the afternoon,” a source close to the deceased told our correspondent.
