Bayelsa Assembly Seeks To Amend UBEB Law

By John Odhe, YENAGOA

The Bayelsa State House of Assembly is seeking to amend the Universal Basic Education Board Law to restore key administrative powers to the Board’s Chairman, following a 2012 amendment that transferred significant executive powers to the Executive Secretary.

Leading the debate, the House Leader, Mr. Monday Obolo, highlights the benefits of the proposed amendment.

On his part, the member representing Brass Constituency Two, Mr. Timi Agala-Omubo, criticises the existing framework and called for stronger institutions and improved administrative efficiency.

The bill has scaled second reading, with lawmakers expressing support for the proposed review aimed at strengthening institutional accountability and improving the administration of basic education across the state.

The legislative initiative is being pursued under the leadership of the Speaker, Mr. Abraham Ingobere, as the Assembly considers reforms to enhance the effective governance of basic education in Bayelsa State.

The house says the initiative is in tandem with the State government’s commitment, under the governor, Senator Douye Diri, to the promotion of educational development in the State.
