Bakassi Ruler: I Overstayed In Office As C’River Royal Fathers Council Chair

Immediate past chairman of the Cross River State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM Etim Okon Edet has reacted to his sudden removal from office. He told TNN in an exclusive interview that even though he was expected to spend two years in office, he actually spent 17 years and was therefore not surprised about the news of his removal.

Edet who is also the paramount ruler of Bakassi however said he heard the news of his removal on social media. When asked if he saw it coming, his response was “no comments.”

He said it was a thing of joy for him to have been allowed to serve in that capacity for nine years-throughout the eight years of Senator Liyel Imoke as governor, throughout the eight years of Prof Ben Ayade as governor and one year under Senator Bassey Otu.

According to the royal father, all his programmes and ideas for the traditional institution and for the progress of the state had been achieved during his years in office. He said the Otu did not have anyu bad intentions for him by relieving him of the position.

As paramount ruler of Bakassi, Edet has been on the forefront in the fight for the rebuilding of Bakassi, a dream that is yet to be fully accomplished. On Tuesday during the interview on Whatsapp, he said it was unfortunate that till date, the Bakassi question was yet to be resolved.

When asked if he knew his successor, his response was in the negative. The state government has also not announced the new occupant of the office.
