From all parts of Nigeria, about 180 support groups assembled in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State and where they made a declaration calling on the vice president, Prof Yemi Osinbajo to contest the 2023 presidential election.

The groups are a part of the New Tribe, the congregation of all those campaigning for the emergence of Osinbajo as the next Nigerian president. They believe that in that tribe, there is no race, colour, ethnic considerations or language. The tribe, according to them, is where every Nigerian belongs.

At Uyo, it was a gathering of the young, the old, the women, the men, professionals, artisans, students, politicians, lecturers, serving and former public servants who believe in the capacity of the vice president to take over from Muhammadu Buhari.

From the welcome party, to the declaration event and the declaration dinner, the delegates spoke with one voice as they defended their choice of Osinbajo.
At the Uyo Declaration, speakers said with Osinbajo on the saddle as president, Nigeria would be a better place for everyone. They said he was the bridge between the old and the young and was very well educated and savvy, to lead the country.

In fact, Edem Duke, a former minister of tourism described him as a vice president that was better than a lot of African presidents. He expressed the hope that the APC would make the best decision by giving its presidential ticket to the vice president.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the event, the supporters said they would mobilise funds “to purchase the APC expression of interest and nomination forms for Prof Yemi Osinbajo in furtherance of our total commitment to the noble course of compelling the Vice President of Nigeria to contest for the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“As the clock ticks, leading to 2023 general elections, the conference, after thorough appraisal of current political trends in APC and INEC timetable, decided to engage more prominent Nigerians, the Academia, Civil Society groups, professional bodies, religious leaders, youths and women organisations on the need to elect a competent and reliable Nigerian with proven track record, integrity, transparency and honesty in the person of Prof Yemi Osinbajo as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in order to realise the vision of the new tribe and a new Nigeria.

“The conference enjoins Nigerians from all walks of life to embrace the vision of the new tribe and lend their weight behind the clamour for Prof. Osinbajo to run and be elected as President of Nigeria in 2023.”

Special adviser to the president on political matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu who spoke at the dinner said it was gratifying to observe that many people offered to pay their way from the north to Uyo, just to show solidarity and support for the vice president.

Describing them as heroes in the struggle for the rebirth of Nigeria, Ojudu said “now the battle is about to start. We are calling all of you to go out and begin to harvest (APC) delegates.

“You all know who the delegates are, they live with you, they live in your neighbourhood, they are your friends, they are your husbands, they are your wives, they are your brothers, they are your sisters, they are your leaders; go out to them and spread the gospel, that you have found this man Osibanjo capable to become president of this country come next year.

“There are about six thousand plus delegates; we must be ready to win five thousand of those delegates. So now the battle is in your hands. They are saying we don’t have structures, you are our structures, go out and build more structures, all of the groups that have come from all over the country, you are the structure of this man of God, this man that we all know is capable of taking this country from where it is now to a higher level.

“So, it is now, don’t leave him alone, he has no bullion van, but he has you, he has you Nigerians, and he is waiting for you to be everywhere for him, let us go and then each one of you here, if you decide to convince ten delegates each, then we have won this race, and you are capable of doing so.”

Senator Ita Enang who also spoke thanked all the support groups for visiting Uyo and taking the decision to stand by Osinbajo in Akwa Ibom.
Meanwhile, it is still unclear where Dr Goodluck Jonathan stands, especially given insinuations that the APC may have zoned the presidential ticket to the south-west.
