The member representing Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency of Cross River State in the House of Reps, Dr Alex Egbona has made an urgent call on the federal government for intervention over the flood saga affecting some communities in Abi Local Government.
Some of the communities affected are Ebom, Ekureku, Ediba, Adadama, Usumutong, Lagangha amongst others. The natives have either been forced to flee their homes or have chosen to live inside the flooded homes, using canoes to move about.
Egbona said on Monday that it was necessary for the federal government agencies to take urgent steps to offer palliatives to his people and also assist in relocating them to safe areas.
“I have received reports from my liaison office back home, that some parts of my constituency are now under flood attack. I really feel for the victims and my heart goes to them in times like this. They will soon hear from me. This is a disaster and needs to be handled as such.
“From the pictures and videos I have seen, the people need very urgent intervention. I am told that some of them have already deserted their homes, albeit it forcefully. I am calling on NEMA as well as the Cross River State Emergency Management Agency, to find immediate and urgent solution to this humanitarian crisis in my constituency.
“I have made calls to the authorities concerned. I am also visiting heads of the agencies in Abuja here and once I am done talking to them, I will also visit the places to see things for myself. The situation needs very urgent attention. All men of goodwill should please arise and help,” he said.
The legislator said some of the communities have had similar experiences in the past but that this year’s flood experience seems to be the worst. He urged the victims to be patient, even as he expressed the hope that with the moves he was making in Abuja, help would soon get to them.
