As Another Christmas Season Beckons

In the next few days, Christians and even those who do not profess Christ all over the world will be celebrating another Christmas and New Yea. It is that time of the year when people do all sorts to celebrate the end of a year and welcome another.
It is that time of the year when road accidents are on the increase, largely because of the rush, especially by commercial drivers, to make more money. But in trying to do that, they either die on the road or cause others to end die as they try to journey home for the festivities.

There are reports of accidents already. Along the East West Road a few days ago, a commercial bus rammed into a stationery truck, but luckily no life was lost. But many of the passengers sustained various degrees of injuries.
A few days ago, a staff of the NTA in Abuja was killed by a moving train as she tried to drive across a major road. Her remains has since been buried, leaving her family members to mourn.
The Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, has made efforts across the country to prevent accidents during this period. But despite their efforts, there are still reports of accidents in some parts of the country.

Apart from road accidents, there have been reports of steady increase in the price of fuel in many parts of the country. The price of food and other items have also reached the roof top. The usual craze for Christmas activities has since started and expectedly, crime is also on the increase.
Only on Friday, at this year’s Christmas carols festival in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the Senior Pastor of Salvation Ministries, Pastor David Ibiyeomie flayed people who celebrate Christmas without bothering to celebrate the man who is the reason for the global celebration- Jesus Christ. He spoke as guest minister at the event which was beamed live in various media platforms.
We agree that Christmas is worth celebrating, but we also believe that in celebrating, we should be careful not to get involved in acts that will lead to the death of others, or infringe on the rights of other people. As you celebrate, it is advisable to be mindful of the fact that a new year is a few days away and it will come with the usual financial and other pressures.
As we celebrate Christmas, we need to remind ourselves of the essence of the season and take steps to do those things that will not be detrimental to the very reason for the season.
