Eyo OKON, Calabar
Having lifted the prestigious Nigerian FA Cup twice in the last four years, what the people of Akwa Ibom State need now and cherish most is the Nigerian Professional Football League trophy which Akwa United Football Club is clamouring for and hell-bent to achieve.
The chairman of Akwa United Football Club of Uyo, Elder Paul Bassey who stated this while exchanging views with TNN Sports said the team which is currently placed 4th on the league table with 29 points had the capacity, the zeal and determination to outwit the current leaders who are on top with only a point difference to clinch the title and go continental when the chips are finally down.
He disclosed that the players were well motivated with enticing welfare package whereby salaries and match bonuses were paid as at when due, pointing out that the situation was not the same in many other clubs across the country where more often than not, the players had to embark on strike to press home their demands for salaries and other entitlements owed them for several months.
“As I speak, the players have received their March salaries. You see having gotten a red-carpet treatment from the management, the onus is on them to deliver” the chairman posited.
Bassey who is also the special assistant to the Akwa Ibom governor on sports matters showered praises on the governor, Mr Udom Emmanuel for his continued support to the club which he said remained a unifying factor and a state flag which unite the entire people of Akwa Ibom.
He also commended the governor for giving Akwa Ibom youths the opportunity to excel in the area of sports through the provision of standard facilities and enabling environments.
