
For his legislative inputs in the 10th National Assembly, the member representing the Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Dr Alex Egbona has been considered the best lawmaker from Cross River State.
Egbona scored highest in the performance assessment undertaken by the Erudite Growth and Advancement Foundation-Africa(ERGAF-Africa) a not-for-profit data savvy civic leadership and citizen engagement hub for democracy, legislative/parliamentary governance and public policy knowledge across Africa.
The group is dedicated to advancing best practices in legislative governance, policy research, public sector governance, citizen engagement, youth development, and leadership and employs innovative data-driven strategies and unique knowledge-sharing methods to support teaching and learning.
According to the assessment report on the performance of all members of the 10th National Assembly, Egbona leads his colleagues from Cross River State, having made the most contributions and attracted more people-oriented projects and programmes to his constituency.
The report covered the first session of the 10th National Assembly of Nigeria, covering June 14th, 2023, to June 13th, 2024.
According to the report, Egbona tops the list with the highest productivity index, scoring 20 legislative actions during the plenary.
His impressive performance earned him 82.35% national score and 17.65% constituency score. He is followed by Mike Etaba (Etung/Obubra Federal Constituency) with 14 legislative actions, scoring 71.43% nationally and 21.43% in his constituency.
From the report, Victor Abang (Boki/Ikom) ranks third with 13 legislative actions, scoring 53.85% nationally and 46.15% in his constituency.
The report highlighted the productivity and effectiveness of lawmakers, with specific attention on contributions to legislative debates and plenary activities. This initiative aims to promote transparency, accountability, and citizen engagement in Nigeria’s legislative governance.

Alex Egbona (Abi/Yakurr) – 20 legislative actions, Mike Etaba (Etung/Obubra) – 14 legislative actions, Victor Abang (Boki/Ikom) – 13 legislative actions, Bassey Joseph (Calabar South/Akpabuyo/Bakassi), Rt. Hon. Bassey Akiba (Calabar Municipal/Odukpani) – 10 legislative actions each, Rt. Hon. Dr. Emil Inyang (Akamkpa/Biase) & Hon. Peter Akpanke (Obanliku/Obudu/Bekwarra) – 5 legislative actions each, Offiono Odey (Ogoja/Yala) – 3 legislative actions.
Egbona is reputed for punctual and regular attendance to plenary and committee activities. He is known to be among the few that religiously attend legislative sittings, sponsoring bills and motions.
One of his bills that has been passed by the House and got the concurrence of the senate, is awaiting the assent of the president. The new law is for the establishment of a federal medical centre in Itigidi.
Also, his bill for an Act to establish the federal institute of mining and geosciences, Akamkpa is currently before the House of Represnetaives. A public hearing to that effect took place last month in Abuja.
Egbona has also sponsored several motions, including the motion for the dredging of the Calabar Port, to allow bigger ships to berth in Calabar, instead of taking them to Lagos and Port Harcourt.
