The Bayelsa government has finalized intensive preparations to mark the historic 30th anniversary of its creation, rolling out a comprehensive four-day programme of activities under the theme “Celebrating Legacies.”
The landmark milestone celebrates three decades since the state was carved out of the old Rivers State on October 1, 1996, by the military administration of the late General Sani Abacha.
Operating under the leadership of the governor, Senator Douye Diri, the state is gearing up to showcase its developmental strides, rich cultural heritage, and resilient history to the rest of the nation and the world.
To ensure a seamless implementation, the government previously inaugurated six specialized sub-committees tasked with executing distinct elements of the celebration.
Spearheaded by the State deputy governor, Dr. Peter Akpe, these planning teams span key sectors including publicity, culture, sports, lectures, and awards.
Notable figures have taken the mantle, including His Majesty King Bubaraye Dakolo heading the Awards Sub-Committee and Olympic champion and Commissioner for Sports Development, Mr. Daniel Igali overseeing sports logistics, signaling the government’s intention to pull out all the stops for a high-profile execution.
The four-day itinerary is scheduled to officially commence on Monday, September 28, 2026, anchoring its opening events around identity and sports.
The morning will feature the Ijaw Language Awareness Campaign at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Memorial Banquet Hall, which underscores the administration’s focus on cultural preservation and regional identity.
Later that afternoon, activities will shift toward athletic competition with an energetic lineup of events at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex in Yenagoa. Traditional will be at its peak on that historic occasion.
Spectacle and performance will take center stage on the second day as the festivities transition toward local heritage and entertainment. On Tuesday, September 29, citizens will witness a sprawling street rally, an expressive cultural carnival, and a traditional boat regatta highlighting the state’s deep-rooted connection to the rivers and waterways of the Niger Delta.
The day will reach its peak with the highly anticipated Bayelsa Musical Concert at the Oxbow Lake Pavilion, showcasing a vibrant array of home-grown musical talents.
Intellectual and spiritual reflections define the third day of the anniversary planning. On Wednesday, September 30, scholars and critical stakeholders will assemble for an anniversary lecture and exhibition designed to review Bayelsa’s political, economic, and socio-cultural progress while charting an inclusive blueprint for the next 30 years.
Following the intellectual discourse, the Samson Siasia Stadium will host a massive “Mega Praise Night,” drawing thousands of residents together for an evening of interdenominational worship and thanksgiving.
In a unique development, organizers have also integrated a potential international milestone into the public squares.
At the Peace Park, located directly opposite the Government House, final setup is underway for a massive exhibition featuring 30,000 cakes. State officials have disclosed that this display is positioned as an official Guinness World Records attempt, adding a modern flair and global attention to the regional celebration.
Also expected during the celebration is the commissioning of some additional infrastructure projects executed by the present administration. One of such is the newly constructed bridge crossing the Epie Creek from Imgbi Road, Amarata to link the New Yenagoa City. The bridge has been completed and cordoned off awaiting official inauguration.
The entire event will culminate on Thursday, October 1, 2026, coinciding perfectly with Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day celebration. Governor Douye Diri will deliver a state-wide anniversary broadcast followed by an interactive media chat to discuss his administration’s ongoing infrastructural projects, such as the major senatorial roads and new Yenagoa city developments amongst others.
The celebrations will officially draw to a close that evening with a grand Anniversary Dinner and Special Awards Ceremony at the Banquet Hall, honoring the founding fathers and eminent individuals who have sacrificed to build the state over the last 30 years.
At the last check, large billboards are superimposing themselves in different parts of Yenagoa, the capital city of Bayelsa State and its surroundings, copiously announcing the epic celebration. Major roads are also being repainted and decorated to give the city a new aesthetic looks as the State begins to welcome guests from all walks of life.
