Incessant heavy rainfall has submerged homes, destroyed farmlands and other sources of livelihood in Degema community, Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State.
Also, the devastating flood has displaced most residents, while several others are unable to leave their homes as flood has surrounded their compound.
The residents expressed concern over the hazardous effect of the situation on the health of their children, whom they are unable to relocate.
They also decried hunger, following their inability to go out in search of their daily bread.
As the rain persists, Degema natives and residents have called for the urgent intervention of the state government, to salvage the community from the flood havoc which has left most residents helpless.
They also appealed for relief materials to enable families feed, as the flood has paralyzed their sources of income.
Mr Nelson Tekena who visited the area, in his save our soul message to the government said, “I am appealing for urgent government intervention as devastating floods destroy homes, farmlands, and paralyze local economies.
“The cries for help follow recent persistent heavy downpours that submerged some houses in Degema town, destroyed houses leaving residents displaced.
“I’m calling on the chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Michael John Williams, for urgent attention. The Degema local government 10th legislative assembly and the political leader of Degema ward 12 Rt Hon Sweiyi Moses, the leaders, state and federal government to intervene quickly.
“The affected villagers have expressed deep fraustration, nothing that they have been abandoned to watch helplessly as their livelihoods drown because they lack the financial resources to relocate without structured government assistance.”
