The Bayelsa State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has commended the State government under the leadership of the governor, Senator Douye Diri for its sustained effort to improve the education sector.
The State chairman of NUT, Comrade Richman Otobo gave the commendation in a statement, describing the administration’s intervention as significant to the development of teaching and learning in the State.
Otobo, who also acknowledged the contribution of the deputy governor, Dr. Peter Akpe and the commissioner for Education, Dr. Gentle Emelah said the interventions were evident in the construction and renovation of schools, provision of desks and other learning tools.
The NUT chairman also lauded the State government’s training and restraining of teachers designed to improve teachers’ capacity and effectiveness.
He described the activities of the State Education Development Trust Fund and the Teachers Training, Registration and Certification Board as commendable steps towards strengthening the education system.
Otobo, who is a member of the EDTF board said his experience in the board has given him first hand knowledge about its impacts across primary, secondary and tertiary institutions in the State.
He highlighted some of the impacts to include intervention in teachers training and retraining, provision of learning tools and science equipment.
Others, he said, include water projects in under served schools and communities as well as support for research and other educational needs.
The NUT boss also commended teachers across the State for continuing to believe in the leadership of the union and maintaining a constructive relationship with the State government.
On issues affecting teachers, Otobo sued for patience and greater reliance on dialogue and established channels of communication, adding that their concerns were legitimate.
He stressed that teachers’ complaints would continue to attract the attention of the union, pointing out that all concerns should be directed to the leadership of the union for necessary and decisive actions.
