Police Arrest Father, Son Over Unlawful Possession Of Firearms

The Bayelsa State Police Command says a farther and his son are now cooling off in its custody over an alleged illegal possession of firearms.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Musa Mohammed, in a statement, said the State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Iyamah Daniel Edebor described the arrest of the two suspects in possession of four single-barrel guns as another significant operational breakthrough.

According to the PPRO, the two suspects identified as Friday Tibi and Oyabrade Tibi were arrested on July 6, 2026 by operatives attached to the Anti-Vice Unit, while conducting a routine stop and search operation along the Igbogene–Tombia Expressway in Yenagoa.

“The operatives intercepted a tricycle conveying two suspects: Tibi Friday, ‘m’, 68 years, of Futoro Gbene community, Ekeremor Local Government Area, and his son, Oyabrade Tibi, ‘m’, 36 years old.

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects were allegedly travelling to Abua, Rivers State, when a search was conducted on the tricycle.

“During the search, four (4) single-barrel guns were concealed inside a sack and covered with sticks in an attempt to escape police arrest.

“The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Yenagoa, for discreet investigation to ascertain the source of the firearms and identify any other persons connected with the offence,” the statement explained.

Mohammed reiterated the command’s commitment to combating the proliferation of illegal firearms and other violent crimes across the state.

He urged members of the public to remain vigilant and continue to support the police with credible and timely information to aid ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and security.
