Chairman of Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State, Mr Okechukwu Akara Nwaogu, has ordered the LGA road decongestion taskforce to ensure strict enforcement of high-tension trading ban in the area.
Nwaogu who revealed that the directive was part of measures to ensure public safety, called for the arrest of traders violating the ban by trading under high-tension lines.
The LG chair also ordered immediate barricade of high-tension trading areas, even as he warned residents against any form of trading and commercial activities under the high-tension electricity poles along the Eke-Oyigbo Market axis.
Nwaogu gave this directives during an inspection visit to the area. He expressed concern over the danger posed by trading beneath high-tension power lines, even as he reaffirmed that the safety of lives and property remained a top priority of his administration.
To prevent further encroachment, the chairman urged the taskforce to enforce the ban and ensure total compliance.
He also directed them to, “arrest anyone found violating the directive and hand such offenders over to the Nigeria Police for appropriate legal action.”
The LG boss appealed to traders and residents to cooperate with the council by relocating to designated trading areas which he described as a well-organized commercial environment across Oyigbo LGA.
