NUT Decries Shortage Of Teachers In Bayelsa

By John Ovie, YENAGOA

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Bayelsa state has cried out over what it described as acute paucity of teachers in public primary and secondary schools in the state.

The union disclosed this during a state executive council meeting held at the NUT House in Yenagoa and presided over by its state chairman, Mr. Richman Otobo.

While commending the state government for implementing the harmonized retirement age of 65 years or 40 years of service and governor Douye Diri’s effort in repositioning the education subsector, the union expressed concerns over alleged lingering welfare and Infrastructure challenges bedeviling basic public academic institutions in the state.

The state NUT complained of none payment of promotion arrears since 2015, failure to implement 2024 and 2025 promotion and neglect of statutory annual salary increment.

The union further lamented that some public primary schools are being run by a single teacher for six classrooms, adding that some of the schools were in deteriorating infrastructural conditions.

The NUT sued for the state government’s urgent intervention to revive the ugly situation.

All efforts made by our correspondent to speak to the Commissioner for Education, Mr. Gentle Emela for comments on the allegations failed as he neither pick his call nor call back. He did not also respond to TNN text message.
