Indications have emerged that the 60 megawatts gas turbine which is to be commissioned by the president, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, this Friday, is being test-run ahead of the inauguration.
Some concerned Bayelsans, including a former President of the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) worldwide, Udengs Eradiri, social analyst, Comrade David West and others have been calling on the state government to ensure that the facility is well tested and all necessary arrangements put in place before its commissioning.
Technical Adviser to the Governor on Media and Public Affairs, Mr. Wisdom Ikuli while speaking to our correspondent over the telephone said the Bayelsa Electricity Company Limited has completed arrangement for the supply of gas from Oando PLC, an energy company operating in the oil rich Niger Delta region.
According to the technical adviser, the anticipated test run had since been scheduled and will end on Thursday April 9.
He said all mechanical finishing touches had been concluded, while the remaining electric poles were being erected to cover the Yenagoa metropolis ahead of the president’s arrival.
Ikuli further disclosed that the supply of gas to the power plant will be consuming over N2.5 million dollars every two months which is approximately N3.4 billion.
While expressing optimism that the powering of the independent electricity would boost business activities and improve night life in Yenagoa, he urged residents to braze up for prompt payment of electricity tariff to enable the state government run the gas turbines effectively.
