National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has issued a stern warning, threatening to occupy the streets and shut down all campuses in Rivers State if justice is not served in the tragic killing of Godwin Akpakpan, a 300-level Computer Science student.
According to NANS, Akpakpan was arrested by men in police uniform during a stop-and-search operation in Port Harcourt on April 16, 2024, and was later shot during an altercation between police officers and individuals in military uniform.

NANS alleges that none of the security agencies involved has claimed responsibility for the bullet that allegedly killed Akpakpan, further complicating the situation.
The students’ union is demanding an immediate investigation into the alleged murder and calling on relevant authorities to bring those involved to book.
Chairman of NANS Rivers State Joint Campus Council, Jokiel Gideon Chinonso, expressed outrage over the incident, stressing the students’ determination to ensure justice.
“We will not allow the lives of our members to be taken without consequences,” Chinonso stated.
“We demand justice for Godwin Francis Akpakpan and his family.”
The NANS chairman emphasized that if no action is taken, the union will not hesitate to occupy the streets and shut down all campuses in Rivers State.
In response to the incident, the university has disclosed that it is collaborating with relevant security agencies to investigate the circumstances surrounding Akpakpan’s death.
The university management has appealed to students and the academic community to remain calm and allow investigations to proceed.
