155 Akwa Ibom Natives To Die In Port Harcourt

About 155 Akwa Ibom citizens are currently awaiting execution at the maximum prison facility at Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
It was an atmosphere of mixed feelings in the state House of Assembly, during the budget defense by advisory prerogatives of mercy, led by the chairman, Adasi Obolum, when he disclosed that 155 condemned Akwa Ibomites were awaiting execution in Port Harcourt maximum prison because Akwa Ibom State had no facility for execution. Out of this number, 85 per cent of them are youths.
Obolum also told the committee on Appropriations and finance that in Ikot Abasi Prison (Correctional center), inmates there are 95 per cent youth, while 5 per cent are elders.
He maintained that though the parastatal was under the SSG’s office, money should be released to enable them train the inmates that were already in the four correctional centers in the state, so that they can be of use to themselves and the society when they are released or pardoned.
He lamented that the N30m allocated to the parastatal was grossly inadequate because as of now, they are not only training the inmates but also equip them with starter packs like sewing machines and barbing equipment, coupled with the fact that they have no official vehicle.
