No fewer than three people have been killed and scores injured in the ongoing cult clash in different locations in Onna, Akwa Ibom State, where the governor, Udom Emmanuel comes from.
TNN learnt that the brawl began late Thursday, August 22, 2019 at Atiamkpat Community in where a man popularly called “Tablet”, was mistakenly killed in lieu of the younger brother who is reported to be member of one of the cult groups, terrorizing the area.
Our source, who is a native of Atiamkpat community, revealed that it was the younger brother of the deceased the rival group wanted.
He said that it was an unfortunate situation and bitter pill to swallow to have lost a very vibrant young man who could not hurt a fly and full of life.
His words: “Tablet wanted to leave for Uyo the night of his untimely death but the mother asked him to spend the night in the village and leave the next morning”
“He came to commence plans for the burial of his grandmother but the unthinkable befell him that night”, he said. Speaking further, he said that though he was not conversant with the names of the cult group, the community was not safe anymore and at the moment, the community was very heavy to dwell in, narrating that greater number of youths were in the bush for fear of the unknown.
Another informant who is a native of Ikot Obong Ishiet where another victim was killed revealed that the situation at hand was more than pathetic.
The informant who gave his name as Iniemem, told our reporter that the community was pondering on what may have been the possible issue for the killings.
While narrating the story to our correspondent, he revealed that the victim’s corpses which was badly slaughtered, was later laid to rest Monday morning.
Another respondent who spoke to our correspondent in Ikot Obio Eket where another victim was slaughtered said the third victim was killed in the presence of his infant child adding that his death is not unconnected to the current clash in the area.
He, however, advised the youths to engage themselves in meaningful ventures rather than engaging in cultism.
On further investigations at Abak Ishiet, Ikot Ese Ishiet, Edem Idim Ishiet, Ikot Udo Esang and surrounding communities where these groups visited in Asuna Nung Oku Clan , it was gathered that gunshots were heard sporadically within their communities.
A few residents who summoned confidence to talk to the press said that they are presently not sleeping with their eyes closed as a result of the brutal encounter.
Commenting on the situation, the Head, State Intelligent Bureau in Onna when contacted said security operatives were on top of the situation, adding that they were patrolling the areas where killings took place.
