Tears In Eleme As Flood Sacks Community

Many communities in Eleme, Rivers State are now at the mercies of flood water, following heavy rainfall experienced in the state in the last few days.

Churches, schools, shops and the roads are not spared. Many pupils have been denied access to their schools because of the sad development.

TNN observed that the Living Faith Church, popularly known as Winners Chapel in Alesa-Eleme, has remained under the water, preventing worshippers from undergoing their religious activities.

As the rains continued on Thursday morning, church members chose to jump into the flooded church in an effort to salvage some of the musical equipment which has since been submerged.

It has been a week of down pour in the state, the result of which is the disruption of business and academic activities in places like Olele and Ekpangbala in Ogale, Okpa in Agbonchia and Okerewa in Aleto, Onura in Alesa, and environs.

Residents say the area has never witnessed flooding of this magnitude. While many attribute the disaster to ongoing road construction projects that have redirected waters from its natural channels, others blame the tragedy on indiscriminate reclamation of flood plains for private development.
