Tennis faithful in Calabar and its environs had a lot to cheer about and remember when the tennis section of the Calabar sports Club organized a one-day competition aimed at selecting players who will represent the club in the next edition of Eastern Nigeria inter-club tennis competition (ENIC).
The championship, which was held at the Calabar Sports Club tennis courts, kept the fans spell-bound, especially in the final match that featured the duo of Tunde Ogundiade and Efa Ojong.
At the end of the energy-sapping final, Ogundiade outshone Ojong 6-4, 6-7 and 6-2 to emerge the number one ranked tennis player of the tennis section.
In his remarks during the closing ceremony, captain of the tennis section of the club, Mr. David Alobi Alobi lauded the winner for emerging the Club number one ranked player and the runner up for putting up a good fight.
He revealed that the tennis section which was one of the biggest in the club was a social and recreational unit aimed at keeping the members in good health and physically fit.
The captain thanked the members for featuring in the annual event and all the sponsors of this year’s edition for committing their resources to the success of the tournament.
He regretted that the game of tennis and other sports had been relegated to the background in favour of football in the country.
Alobi used the occasion to appeal to government and corporate bodies to establish tennis academy in the country so as to “catch them young” and groom them for national and international competitions.
