The NNS Jubilee in Ikot Abasi has uncovered an illegal Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) depot at Liverpool Street in Eket Local government Area.
Lieutenant Commander Umaru Sidi, leader of the team disclosed this when he handed over the recovered items to the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Akwa Ibom Command, on Thursday, in Eket.
He said while on patrol, they got information and deployed their men to the scene.
Receiving the items, Mr Adeyinka Ayinla, the state Commandant of the NSCDC, expressed gratitude to the Navy for its prompt action and promised to commence investigation immediately.
“My officers in charge of Anti-vandalism called me that they got information from Nigerian Navy about an illegal depot in the area,” he said.
Ayinla, who described the perpetrators as saboteurs said they “normally come through the creeks into Qua River to carry out their nefarious crime in the state,”
He explained that the Qua River was also used as an oil depot where they lift illegal AGO to various parts of Akwa Ibom and beyond.
“In line with the commandant’s directive, the NSCDC combed the vicinity for more evidence. The investigators fished out a number plate suspected to belong to the recovered tanker.
“Apart from this, they discovered an additional underground tank, bringing the number of underground tanks to four instead of the three handed over earlier.
“The men also dismantled all materials used, to prevent a repeat of such illegal operation at the location and setting the stage for proper investigation.”
Olanrewaju added that an analysis of the scene would be conducted to help fish out those behind the act and warned that illegal oil dealers would henceforth face difficult times in the State.
