The proposed overhead bridge at Nnung Oku Ikono Junction (Ekom Iman) along Uyo – Aback road has generated mixed reactions from residents of Akwa Ibom, especially Uyo, the capital city of the state.
While many pour encomiums on the governor Udom Emmanuel for the initiative, others remain pessimistic about the completion of the project.
Speaking with our correspondent, Etim Udo who owns a provision store beside the roundabout said the decision of the state government to construct an overhead bridge at the junction would be one of his signature projects. According to him, many lives had been consumed in fatal motor accidents at the junction because of congestion and lack of road signs.
”You know these big trailers that load gravels from Akamkpa in Cross River State and other parts of the country pass through here to Rivers and other States. This place has remained a death trap since the dualization of the Idoro Road by the Victor Attah’s administration.
“So I commend Gov Udom Emmanuel for the project, but my prayer is that the project should be completed before he leaves Office.”
Speaking in the same, Anthony Ekpe, who runs a restaurant at the junction said, “I am happy, but I pray that the project should not be dumped like many others in the state .
Ekpe listed the 15 industries embarked upon by the state government and regretted that none of them had reached 15 per cent completion even after four years, while others died on arrival.” Where is the car assembling industry, the fertilizer company? What about the coconut refinery at Mkpat Enin where the coconuts have all died? How many youth are working there? I commend the state government, but I am not excited yet, until it is completed”
However, Madam Ekaete Eton who sells food stuff at Udua Okpokpo, beside the Asan Ibibio, expressed joy over the project. According to her Udom Emmanuel “is a working governor.”
“Even though many shops are destroyed, the flyover is a very good thing, it will beautify and decongest the junction and save lives. It will also boost business in the area, I thank him for the idea and I pray that God should protect him”
