Let There Be Peace

Being a press statement by Hon. Alex Egbona, member representing Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, on Sunday, October 25, 2020
I am seriously in tears for our dear Cross River State. My heart bleeds over the high level of brigandage that our state experienced particularly on Saturday, October 24, 2020, when our young boys and girls decided to go on rampage, destroying all that we have jointly and individually laboured for, over the years.
I weep for those whose property were either vandalised or razed by the hoodlums, as they hijacked what was seen as a peaceful protest in the state. I find it difficult to believe that our people could engage in this kind of condemnable action that has now brought mockery to us as a people.
At this point in time, I wish to express my deep sympathy with all those whose property were either destroyed, looted or burnt. I very sincerely sympathise with those who may have lost their loved ones during the avoidable madness. As a victim of that senseless attack(and I have forgiven the perpetrators), I know where it hurts. It is my sincere hope, however, that our state shall never experience that kind of satanic attacks.
I am a firm believer in empowerment. In all my days as a public officer, I have taken deliberate steps at all times to help people get to the top. That is why, despite the challenges I faced before, during and after my election, I refused to think about my personal comfort. The welfare and good life of my people have always been my driving force. I must say that I remain committed to this lifestyle for the rest of my life.
Mbora Condemns Attack In Calabar, Calls For Immediate Action
My dear compatriots, particularly the people of Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency, our state has had enough hostilities. I plead with you to allow peace to reign. And this should start from your household. Let there be peace in every home, let there be peace in every family, let there be peace in every local government and let there be peace in our state.
If, for whatever reason, you think there are issues that need to be addressed by us your leaders, take advantage of the known means of communication to reach out to us. For instance, my constituency office is there, along the Ediba Road in Ugep. Feel free to reach me through that office and other channels of communication which you have and you can be sure that I will do my very best to address the concerns as much as I possibly can.

You all know me. You know my antecedents. You know that I have you at heart always. Please do not get involved in criminal acts that will bring shame to us as your leaders, or your parents, or your family or your church.
If you are from my constituency, you must have been aware that I have started reaching out to our people. The empowerment programme is in phases and will get to everybody in the federal constituency, either directly or indirectly.
Many have already been assisted by me to gain employment in federal government agencies and parastatals, while others have been assisted in various other ways. I keep doing this to enable our people eke out a decent living. In the next few weeks, many others will benefit from my empowerment programme. My promise to you is that I will continue to serve you selflessly.
But to make this happen continually, we need peace. I urge you therefore, to run away from anything that will put you in trouble and give our constituency a bad name.
May God heal our land and help us to do the things that are right in the sight of God and in the sight of men, at all times.
Long Live Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency
Long Live Cross River State.
Signed
