FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup: Nigeria Unveil Squad

The FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup is an international association football tournament, organized by Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), for national teams of women under the age of 20.

It was first conducted in 2002, sixteen years ago, as the FIFA U-19 women’s world championship with an upper age limit of 19. But in 2006, the age limit for the young women’s tournament was raised to the current 20.

The event was renamed a world cup with the 2008 competition. But ahead of the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup billed for August 5-24, 2018 in France, Coach Christopher Danjuma has unveiled Nigeria 21-woman list for the soccer fiesta.

The Falconets’ squad is composed of three goalkeepers, six defenders, seven midfielders and five strikers .

The U-20 young women remain the nation’s most successful women’s team at the global level, having won silver at the FIFA world cup two times- Germany 2010 and Canada 2014, bronze once – Japan 2012, and reaching the quarter-finals in Thailand 2004, Russia 2006 and Chile 2008.

Nigeria U-20 women’s team will battle Haiti, Germany and China in Group D of the 16-nation finals, while Africa’s other flag bearer, Ghana warm up to negotiate a place in Group A against host France, New Zealand and the Netherlands.

The Falconets’ opening match is against their perennial soccer foes, Germany, who beat Nigeria in the 2010 and 2014 final matches at the Stade de Marville in Saint Malo on Monday, August 6 before clashes with Haiti at the same venue on Thursday, August 9 and against China in Dinan Lehon’s Stade de Clos Gastel on Monday, August 13.

FIFA U-20 Womens World Cup Groupings

Group A- Ghana, France, New Zealand and Netherlands .

Group B- Korea DPR, Mexico, England and Brazil.

Group C- Spain, USA , Japan and Paraguay.

Group D- Nigeria, China, Germany and Haiti.
