The member representing Abi/Yakurr Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Dr Alex Egbona has condemned recent moves by some local government chapter chairmen of the APC in the state, to remove the party chairman, Barr. Alphonsus Eba.
Egbona, who is the chairman of the House Committee on Specialty Healthcare, said in a statement in Abuja, that those who are calling for the chairman’s resignation were not doing so in the overall interest of the party.
Saying that the chairman was serving the state well, Egbona who is a foundation member of the party in the state, observed that what the chairmen were doing was driven more by selfish interests than the interest of the state chapter.
In 2019, Egbona was the only voice of the party in Cross River, at a time that the entire state was controlled by the PDP. He stood alone to wrestle power with the PDP and won his initial election into the National Assembly, despite efforts by the sitting PDP government to frustrate him.
The lawmaker said given his sacrifices and commitment to the party, he was in a better position to advice towards the progress of the APC in the state, and noted that nobody should allow themselves to be used to bring down the party or its leaders.
He said: “I am worried by what I have been reading and hearing about the actions of some of our party leaders in the local governments, against our state chairman. This is very unhealthy and should not be allowed to fester.
“Going against a party chairman that has been working relentlessly for the growth and successes of, not just the party but our state, cannot be an action in good faith. The plot has to stop now because it is taking us backwards.
“Some of the people who are behind this plot are not accountable even in their own little corner. There are some of them that have misused funds given to them for rents, thereby causing the party some serious embarrassments.
“People should be able to remove the speck from their eyes to enable them see properly, the stone in another person’s eyes. To do otherwise is to be pretentious and clever by less than half. I challenge some of the party chairmen who are spearheading this move to render publicly, the accounts of funds that have been given to them to run the party in their local governments, before joining the band wagon to revolt against a man who is running our party to the best of his ability.”
Egbona urged all those behind the plot to oust the party chairman to have a rethink and join hands with Eba to move the party to the next level, and support the state governor in his drive to reposition the state in line with the Peoples First Agenda and the Renewed Hope mantra of the president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
