Darkness has continued to pervade the entire Yenagoa, the capital city of Bayelsa and its environs despite the expiration of the 21 day ultimatum slammed on the Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC) by the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) to rectify the power situation in the state.
The pan Ijaw youth organization had warned the power distribution company to ensure that there was steady power supply in the state in twenty-one days or have their activities completely shutdown in Yenagoa and other parts of the state.
At the expiration of the ultimatum, lYC members in their hundreds took to the streets of Yenagoa at the weekend to express their anger over the persistent power outage in most parts of the state capital.
The aggrieved youths who matched to the office of the Port Harcourt electricity distribution company along the Isaac Boro Expressway were carrying placards with inscriptions such as “PHEDC give us light, we are tired of paying for darkness,” among others.
Chairman of the lYC Central Zone, Mr. Kenneth Olorogun hinted during the rally that the ljaw youth body would not give further notice before taking its next action, which he said, would shock PHEDC if the light situation did not improve.
Olorogun said “this is the final warning. We will not inform you of our next action if power supply does not improve in the state. Let it be known to you that our next action will shock you.”
The youth leader decried a situation where residents would pay for electricity that they did not consume, urging the power distributors to step up their game
