Behold Senator Sandy De Laughter Master Onor

3 min read

OFONIME UMANAH

When the 9th senate named Prof Sandy Ojang Onor as its orator, they did so because of his mastery of words and for the dexterity with which he chooses his words when he speaks. Words flow so easily from his loins and gets out graciously.

He has a very intimidating frame and when he is walking, the world around him also moves. He commands a commanding followership of living and non living things when he talks and moves. You are either in love with his oratory prowess or with his stylish and locomotive steps.

Those who hate him do so because they hate to like his guts or his intimidating frame or his bluntness. But there is hardly anyone who hates him because of the way he laughs. If there is a stigma on Onor, it is because of how he laughs. He does it so effortlessly. He laughs graciously. He laughs momentarily. He laughs vicariously. He laughs when he is sad. He laughs when he is excited. He laughs generously even when people expect him to be gloomy.

If he giggles under normal circumstances, Onor brings out the best of him when he is tickled. He can roll on the floor with laughter. If you are around him, watch it, you can be infected. And he has a way of tormenting people with the palpable aroma of his laughter that oozes from his underbelly.

He can joke with food. He can joke with drinks. He can joke with sleep. He can joke with whatever, but he hardly jokes with laughter. Laughter appears to be as important as the air, to him. He laughs when it is convenient and when it is not convenient. Senator Sandy Onor roars when the anointing of laughter falls on him. Just as the ground shakes when he moves, like the caterpillar (and in Cross River, they know him as the original caterpillar), so also does the earth quakes when he gets into cloud nine in laughter. At that point, what you will begin to see are light tears, a water channel that sometimes run down his cheeks, the way River Niger and River Benue would flow to meet themselves in Kogi.

The senate might not have known this part of him when he was decorated with the robe of orator of the 9th senate. Otherwise, they would have also given him the toga of laughter master of the 9th National Assembly. If they do that within the remaining days that he has to serve the Cross River Central Senatorial District in the senate, then they would have properly identified him his complete natural endowments.

But why does he laugh the way he does? To answer this question, he spent about a minute laughing. When you even thought that he was done, he started afresh, this time vibrating and roaring and you would think that he would suffer some rib pains. Not Senator Onor. When the laughter tempo had almost died down, he cleared his throat and then said: “laughter, for me, is a stream, a river and it flows from the inside. I have chosen to live a happy, easy going life. There is nothing in this life to worry about. Laughter, genuine laughter is my nature. You asked why I laugh the way I do. Simple. I am contented and I have a very strong faith in God that there is nothing he cannot do.

So, does he ever get angry? Of course he does. But he told TNN that even when he gets angry, he gets over it very quickly. How does he do it? That was the next question. His response: It comes so easily. I switch to my permanent lifestyle of “happiness as fast as the speed of light.”

Maybe, by the time he gets into office as governor of Cross River State, he would be known with the toga-the laughing governor, just as the in-coming governor of Osun State is being known and called the dancing governor.
