Barring last minute alterations, the APC in Bayelsa State has chosen Senator Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo as its deputy governorship candidate for the November gubernatorial election in the state.
Degi-Eremienyo, a serving bishop, is the current senator representing Bayelsa East senatorial district in the National Assembly. Just last week, the elections tribunal affirmed his election as the validly elected senator.
However, there has been uproar in the PDP, where the governor, Seriake Dickson is said to be insisting on the choice of the senator representing Bayelsa West senatorial district, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo.
A good number of party members are said to have kicked against Ewhrudjakpo choice. Some of those who kicked against his choice believe that the senator was Dickson’s nephew as so it would absurd for him to emerge as the running mate.
Ewhrudjakpo is from the same Sagbama local government as the governor. There have been speculations before now, that Dickson plans to enthrone the senator as deputy governor to enable him(the governor) take his place at the senate, as that seat would be vacant from February next year.
Some stakeholders in the PDP however hold the view that the deputy governorship slot should go to Ogbia Local Government as a way of pacifying the former president, Dr Goodluck Jonathan. Some of the names listed as possible candidates include Benson Agadaga and Robert Enogha, a former commissioner in the state.
In an interview, spokesman of the PDP in the state, Macbere Osom said there was no uproar in the party as a result of the choice of running mate for Senator Douye Diri. Rather, Osom said what was going on was part of the processes for the party to make the right choice.
The APC deputy governorship candidate is known to be very intelligent and an astute administrator. Those who know him very well say he pays too much attention to details. The former chairman of Nembe Local Government was said to have done so much for the local government during his tenure.
His is seen as a very strong force in Nembe, a credential that may have contributed to his victory during the last election, despite the perceived strength of the PDP in the area.
