The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State has suffered a significant political blow ahead of the 2027 general elections following a Federal High Court ruling nullifying governor Hope Uzodimma’s nomination as the party’s senatorial candidate for the Imo West District.
In a landmark judgment delivered on October 29, 2026, by Justice Obiora Egwuatu in Abuja, the court restrained the incumbent governor from parading himself as the party’s flagbearer for the upcoming January 16, 2027, senatorial poll. The court declared former governor Rochas Okorocha as the valid winner of the May 18, 2026, party primary and ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to immediately replace Uzodimma’s name with Okorocha’s on the candidate portal.

The court’s decision fundamentally reshapes the local APC hierarchy by bringing the fierce, long-standing rivalry between Uzodimma and his successor, Okorocha back to the forefront. Justice Egwuatu held that the APC’s submission of Uzodimma’s name breached Sections 29 and 32 of the Electoral Act, failing to comply with the party’s own internal guidelines.
While Okorocha’s camp celebrated the verdict as a victory for constitutional democracy, the Imo State chapter of the APC swiftly rejected the judgment. The party’s leadership argued that the suit was brought well past the 14-day constitutional window for pre-election matters and announced plans to aggressively appeal the decision at the Court of Appeal.
This dramatic legal upset introduces serious structural complications for the APC’s broader logistical preparations within Imo State. Uzodimma, who serves as the chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Secretary of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, is a critical coordinator for the ruling party’s national interests.
The ruling is also a great setback to Uzodimma’s ambition to become senate president in the next political dispensation. This development may also sweeten the heart of the likes of Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, who has openly vowed to work against the emergence of Uzodimma as Senate President in 2027 if he wins his senatorial district.
With his personal political future tied up in an escalating appellate court battle, the governor’s ability to run a unified and tightly integrated state campaign structure is significantly compromised. Distracted by a re-ignited domestic power struggle against Okorocha’s influential faction, the state chapter faces immediate risks of internal fracturing and resource diversion away from foundational grassroots mobilization.
Most critically, the judgment carries profound strategic implications for the 2027 presidential election within the highly contested South-East geopolitical zone. Imo State has long served as the APC’s primary operational launchpad in a region historically dominated by opposition parties like the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and the Labour Party (LP).
By stripping the sitting governor of his momentum, the ruling threatens to weaken the execution of the APC’s regional vote-delivery machine. If the ruling party remains deeply polarized by this internal executive warfare, its vulnerability could open clear operational pathways for rival presidential campaigns to capture a greater share of the Imo electorate, especially by the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Party (NDC), Peter Obi.
Fundamentally, the court-ordered substitution places the APC at a delicate crossroads where local grievances threaten to undermine nationwide executive ambitions.
If Uzodimma fails to overturn the judgment on appeal, the party must adjust to a reality where its most powerful regional asset is sidelined from the legislative ballot. Conversely, Okorocha’s return to active candidacy introduces an unpredictable dynamic to local coalition-building.
How effectively the APC manages this deep internal friction over the coming weeks will largely determine whether the party can maintain a cohesive front to secure both its senatorial seats and vital presidential margins in Imo State. The presidential candidate of the APC, may be on the receiving end in Imo state.
