By John Odhe

The people of Bayelsa State have commended a High Court sitting in Yenagoa for sentencing a woman to prison for human trafficking with the intention of making brisk financial gains.

The high court presided over by Justice Adokeme has sentenced one Gloria Lucky, a 25-year old woman, to 7 years imprisonment for human trafficking and sexual exploitation.

A statement by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) says Lucky was jailed on 4-count under the Trafficking in Persons Prohibition Enforcement and Administration Act of 2015.

The charges included conspiracy, facilitating the activities of persons engaged in human trafficking, procuring persons under the age of 18 for sexual exploitation and facilitating foreign travels for the purpose of prostitution.

Reacting to the judgement, residents described the ruling as a welcome development, adding that it would serve as a different to others who are involved in the ungodly act.

Mrs. Mary Timinipre, a mother of three, said “this issue of human trafficking has becoming a menace in the world, especially in Nigeria. I hope this judgement will send a serious warning to the perpetrators of this evil act.

“I’m really happy for this judgement. Let those who are still perpetrating this evil in the name of making money know that a day of judgement is coming.”

Also reacting to the judgement, Mr. Paebi James, a Yenagoa resident, cautioned parents against giving out their children to those with shady occupations.

“Parents should be very careful these days. A lot is happening. Before you release your child to anyone, try to know what the real purpose is.

“We have seen many cases where even relatives come in the guise of job opportunities and educational help to lure children into illicit activities,” he said, urging parents to be vigilant and report suspicious advancements towards their children and wards.
