In a significant step towards improving access to quality and specialized healthcare services for residents and neighbouring communities, the House of Representatives has concurred with the Senate Bill seeking to establish a Federal Medical Centre, FMC, in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The bill sponsored by the former deputy governor, Dr. Ipalibo Harry Banigo, who is representing Rivers West Senatorial District, is titled Federal Medical Centre, Bonny, Rivers State and for Related Matters (SB. 659).
It seeks to amend the relevant provisions of the Federal Medical Centres Act to provide the legal framework for the establishment of the proposed medical facility.

The medical facility will strengthen healthcare delivery and ensure that residents have access to timely, affordable, and efficient medical services.
The bill underscores stakeholders commitment to strengthening the healthcare system and ensuring that quality healthcare services are accessible to all.
The proposed Federal Medical Centre is expected to strengthen healthcare delivery, reduce the burden on existing medical facilities and improve access to timely medical attention, particularly for patients requiring specialised and emergency care.
The establishment of the centre is also expected to help address challenges associated with accessing advanced medical services, including the difficulties and additional costs patients may face when travelling outside their communities for treatment.
It would further create opportunities to strengthen medical training, support healthcare professionals and improve the capacity of the region’s healthcare system.
The Bill, having been transmitted to the House of Representatives for consideration and concurrence, has now received the required legislative approval at this stage. This development represents an important milestone in the legislative process towards the establishment of the proposed Federal Medical Centre in Bonny.
Following the concurrence, the Bill is expected to proceed through the remaining legislative and constitutional processes, including presentation to the President for assent, subject to the completion of all applicable requirements.
Banigo’s sponsorship of the Bill reflects her commitment to advancing healthcare infrastructure, promoting equitable access to medical services and strengthening the health sector in Rivers State and Nigeria at large.
The proposed Federal Medical Centre, Bonny, is envisioned as an important addition to the healthcare infrastructure of Rivers State, with the potential to improve patient outcomes and bring essential specialist services closer to the people.
The successful passage of this legislative milestone brings the vision of improved access to quality healthcare in Bonny and surrounding communities closer to realization.
