Five passengers have survived a boat mishap along the Nigeria-Cameroun water route through the intervention of fishermen from Cameroun, even though eight others could not make it, after their boats collided.
It is not clear if the victims and survivors were on a fishing spree. But police sources said on Wednesday that the incident occurred along the Ikang axis of Bakassi Local Government Area of Cross River State.
According to Mr Eitokpah Sunday Akata, the incident occurred penultimate week 2026 while a speed boat carrying 13 Nigerian passengers was sailing from Ikang towards the Republic of Cameroon through the Cameroon territorial waters around the Tikoro area.
Akata said the boat collided with another speed boat fitted with a double Yamaha engine, adding that the bodies of the persons feared drowned were subsequently brought to Simon Beach, Ikang.
He said the Marine Police, Ikang, has been directed to ensure that the recovered bodies are properly identified by their respective families and deposited at the morgue, while further developments are being followed up.
The PPRO added that the command was also liaising with relevant authorities and affected families as efforts continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
This is even as another accident has occurred at the Okumita junction in Akamkpa in the same Cross River State, with an unspecified number of injured persons, though it could not be confirmed if any life was lost.
