Forgotten Rivers Community Set For First-Ever Electricity Connection

Finally, natives and residents of Amaekunne Community in Okehi II, Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State, are on the verge of enjoying electricity for the first time since the inception of the community.

This follows the delivery of 5,000-metre of aluminium conductor by the LGA chairman, Chief Chima Njoku, as part of efforts to connect the area to the national grid.

The delivery will bring to end, decades of darkness in the community, in line with the chairman’s promise that his administration would ensure that every community in Etche has access to electricity.

The lack of electricity has, for years, constrained economic activities, hindered access to quality healthcare and education, increased security challenges, and slowed the overall socio-economic development of the community.

The delivery of the 5,000-metre drum of aluminum conductor is part of the chairman’s efforts to formally connect Amaekunne Community, which has remained without electricity, to the national grid.

The project which is another significant milestone in the ongoing rural electrification programme council boss would bring the community closer to enjoying a reliable power supply.

The aluminium conductor was officially handed over by the chairman of the Etche Electricity Committee, Mr. Egbufor Abuchi, who represented the chairman.

It was received by the community’s traditional leadership, the CDC, and youth representatives.

Speaking during the ceremony, the Ochimba of Amaekunne Community, Chief Nwanyanwu Hycient, thanked the chairman for fulfilling his promise to the community. He described the intervention as a landmark achievement that would positively transform the lives of the people and formally acknowledged receipt of the 5,000 metres of armoured cable.

Also speaking, the chairman of the CDC, Mr. Darlington Chijioke Obilor, commended Njoku for what he described as a historic intervention.

According to him, the electrification project markes the first time the community is on the verge of being connected to electricity since its creation.
